About Petre

A school of one, since 2007.

Independent, university-preparatory, fully online — and never more than one student in the room.

Our story

Built around a simple refusal.

Petre College was founded in Toronto in 2007 by Irene Petre, who refused to accept that a bright student should ever be one face among thirty. She has been Head of School every year since. The model has never changed: one certified Ontario teacher, one student, live on screen — every single lesson.

Nineteen years later, that refusal has become a track record. Our graduates study at Columbia, Brown, McGill, U of T, Waterloo and beyond — and every one of them was taught by name, never by row.

Petre is an independent, not-for-profit, university-preparatory school — and an Apple Distinguished School, an invitation-only recognition for schools that demonstrate educational excellence, leadership and continuous innovation.

How we teach

The one-to-one difference, in practice.

The lesson bends to the student

No pacing to the middle of a class. A concept that lands in five minutes takes five minutes; one that needs an hour gets the hour.

One teacher, the whole course

Your child keeps the same Ontario Certified Teacher from first lesson to final exam — someone who knows exactly where they are.

Parents see everything

Marks, attendance, and teacher notes appear in the family portal the moment they happen. No end-of-term surprises, ever.
